Woman's Own 1937

Friday 2 January 1937

Read what your granny read…Exciting stories (e.g. Murder Party), delicious recipes (e.g. casserole of cooked turkey), sophisticated party games (e.g. hunt the pencil), unconvincing adverts (are you DEAF? – ‘EAREX’ drops will enable you to hear perfectly – I SAID EAREX DRO– oh forget it), advice about hair styles (“Beware of men with deep blue-black wavy hair – they are born flatterers and most unreliable”). There is an agony aunt page, articles on clothes, children, mothers and much, much more.

The condition of this magazine is ‘used’ and one of the pages is adrift – but it is all there and provides a fascinating insight into a housewife’s world shortly before the Second World War.  Here is the beginning of the editorial:

‘I often hear people sigh that they would like to have lived fifty or a hundred yeas ago – or even fifty years hence…..’  Well we do!

28 pages.  8½ x 11¾ inches

Offers considered.

There is a Woman’s Own Cookery medal for sale elsewhere on this site – not sure where – both would make good stocking fillers…….
