TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF HIS MERCY IN THAT HE DID SPARE THE LIFE OF MY BROTHER ARNOLD WHEN HE LAY SORE SICK OF A FEVER I HAVE DONE THIS THING. H.S.W.EDWARDES, MCM11
We really like this THING what H.S.W Edwardes done in 1902 and we think you will too. It seems he went on to do other things – largely in Nigeria, and while working in the Political Department there in the 1920s he investigated the river site where the famous explorer Mungo Park allegedly drowned (or was murdered) in 1806. Our Mr Edwardes it seems is also noted for writing a tome entitled Elementary Road Making in Nigeria – essential reading for the insomniac. As for poor frail Arnold – what happened next? We have no idea but can find no records of his demise in the Great War, so that's a relief.
It measures 9½ by 6½ inches and is made of sheet copper laid over a section of what looks like floor board and fixed with brass studs. The condition is okay – a few blemishes here and there but nothing to work you up into a fever. It is unique, very nice and should be bought immediately by a member of the Edwardes family (who should never have let it go in the first place) or anyone interested in collecting votive offerings.
