This is a really smart number – we think it is Edwardian or Victorian. A finely made whip that is far too delicate and classy to use. However it can serve as a relic of a bygone age when it was acceptable to go round hitting things smaller and more vulnerable than you. Admire but do not use.
The handle is made we believe of finely plaited leather, the thong (well what else do you call the other bit eh? Tell us and we will change it) is –again we believe – finely plaited thin cord or thread. We thought at first it was horse hair but we caught the office cat playing with it and the end is now a tad unravelled….see photo.
The end and collar appear to be made of silver (the silver dip brought them up a treat) but as we can find no makers mark we have to call them white metal – and atop is a well-sculpted dog’s head.
What sort of dog? We hear you cry.
Well it has to be a whippet doesn’t it.?
Just over 26 inches long.
