A Fake Horse Brass
This horse brass has never been near a horse in its life.
It is a real fake
As most horse brasses are.
Made with deception in mind
But we at Cybergrot.com
Do not intend to deceive anyone
Okay it is made of brass
And it looks like the real thing
But we don’t think it is.
Right! We have stopped beating ourselves up now.
This fake horse brass shows a very traditional subject – A pelican feeding its young.
This is a Christian symbol that goes way, way back…
For one version of the story, we suggest you buy T.H.White’s The Book of Beasts in our book section…
for another read on.
The pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, and would pierce her own breast to feed them with her own blood when no other food was available. As a result, the pelican became a symbol self sacrifice and therefore of the Passion of Christ.
We reckon the pelican on this horse-brass is doing just that.
This is a pleasingly solid thing that measures 3 inches across at its narrowest point. It would fit happily into the Christmas stocking of your horse-mad teenager who would not care whether it is the real thing or not!
"A wonderful bird is the pelican; his beak can hold more than his belly can..."
