The Art of Driving (1938)
This is the must-have book of the century!
Although undated we think the cover is a dead give-away as the car registration is AD 1938 (oooh how clever). To support this E.A.Hill has signed it inside - July 1938.
The cover is a bit worn but otherwise the book is in good condition considering its age.
Compulsory driving tests were brought in England in 1935. These were for new drivers – existing drivers were exempt. This little book tells you not only how to drive but also how to pass the test.
We are including an insert with handy tips - such as
How to Stop:
Off accelerator
Ready for footbrake (right big pedal)
Hand out, give stop sign
Clutch out and footbrake as required…
And when it comes to safety first they suggest -
“Open your eyes” (now why didn't we think of that?)
There are several pages of stylish adverts front and back and then 20 chapters spelling out exactly how to drive a car.
What more perfect gift for that young person about to embark on his or her first driving experience? Or for the spouse who is a car-bore?
It measures just under 7½ x 5 inches and it contains one black and white photo of an accident!
Postage and packing anywhere in the world included.
Footnote for feminists: you will notice that the driver on the cover is female but throughout the book the driver is referred to as ‘he’!
