Village Silhouettes By Charles Latimer Marson 1914

£18.00

First (and-we hope-only) edition 1914.

Here is the start of the preface: ‘These Village Silhouettes have a serious purpose. It is to bear some testimony to what the author has discovered – how shameful and blind to have discovered it so late! – the greatness, the sweetness and the cleverness of God’s common people, in the green of the world.’
You must buy this gem to read more of this priceless prose……..

This little book measures a mere 13.5 x 20 cms and the pages – all 101 or so of them are in reasonable if slightly grubby condition.

The hard cover – once an unpleasant brown cloth affair – is now totally revolting with a number of alarming areas where water - and no doubt other more dubious liquids - have penetrated.

And it is not the only thing on this earth to be spineless.

The book is well illustrated with 14 rather fine silhouettes (hence the title we presume). And the choice chapter headings include such gems as: ‘A Whiff of Ireland’!

It is laced with verbal lollypops: ‘A village is only a little slice of the big world pudding’ and information about long-forgotten customs: do you know how to shackle eggs? No? Then this is the book for you!

But there is more! Someone has stuck two old sepia postcards of the well frocked author the Rev Charles Marson at the front and rear of the book, and has also inserted a tract about him – one of a series called ‘Heroes of the Catholic Revival THREEPENCE’.
We are including this tract and the squashed spider on page 9 free of charge …….

Worldwide postage included in the price.
